I'm not sure what triggered the bios settings to change because my soundcard had already been installed for some time but the sound being disabled caused blue screens on driver installation. Turns out my motherboard decided one day to disable my onboard sound, thats all it was.

I can't find anyone with the exact same issue who has found a solution to get the drivers to work again. No High Definition Speakers are appearing in Playback devices, everything is defaulted to the monitors speakers. And if you click update driver, that will complete but finish with a blue screen - which is exactly what was happening to me and why I gave up. Device manager > Units for sound, video and games > Properties on the sound card > driver > update driver > look through computer for drivers > Let me choose on a list > untick 'show compatible hardware > choose microsoft as producer > And choose High Definition Audio driver. They appeared disabled, if you re-enabled them, they blue screen you. Try to change the driver into microsofts standard sound driver. He reinstalled the drivers from his mobo manufacturer and they still didn't appear in Device Manager until he navigated to his Program Files and opened up his Realtek folder which made the drivers appear in Device Manager.
